Originally, Mr. Popper's Penguins is a 1938 children's book by Richard & Florence Atwater, which won the 1939 Newbery Award. The charming chapter book is 139 pages long, and perfect for kids about ages 6-10. The book is also a fun and easy read aloud if you're looking for something to read to kids as young as three or four.

The plot and characters in the book differ from the movie. In the book, Mr. Popper is a painter who dreams of world exploration and is particularly interested in the poles.
